Primary May 17th - PA LWV Voter's Guide
Written by Administrator

The state League has assembled a Voter's Guide for the Municipal Primary--click here to view the PDF file. This covers only the judicial candidates, since Judge of the Superior Court and Judge of the Commonwealth Court are the only state-wide races. The Susquehanna County League was not able to create a local voter's guide for this election. However, there is a Meet the Candidates event being held on Friday, May 6th, at the Elk Lake High School Auditorium (7pm-9pm). Candidates for County Commissioner, County Auditor, and New Milford District Justice have been invited to participate.

LWV position on Marcellus Shale
Written by Administrator

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania recently completed a year-long survey of issues surrounding the Marcellus Shale. Our local chapter participated by extensively studying the issues and submitting a consensus study. The League has now released a position statement, as well as a study guide and a Facts and Questions document.

At a press conference announcing the study results, League President Olivia Thorne said, "We recognize the significant economic importance of extracting gas from Marcellus Shale. However, we have serious concerns about the cumulative, long-term consequences of the extraction process." Thorne called for adoption of a severance tax on the extracted gas and a moratorium on drilling in state forestland. She said the moratorium is needed to provide time to compile data, review implications and develop adequate safeguards. She cited a provision in Article I of Pennsylvania’s Constitution that states "Pennsylvania’s public natural resources are the common property of all the people" and that the people "have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment."
