A new non-partisan, grassroots organization is starting up in Susquehanna County: the Civic Action Network (CAN). Meetings are the second Sunday of the month, from 2pm-4pm. The next meeting is on March 8th at the Quest Center in Hop Bottom. Everyone is welcome. To join the mailing list, please visit the Google Groups page (you will need a free Google account), or email hce@epix.net .

The group is still working on a mission statement, but the basic goal is to work for the betterment of our community across different interest groups, joining with the many excellent groups already in existence to make progress on our common goals.

Interests of participants include

  • Health care
  • Housing
  • Food (including organic gardening, etc.)
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Energy
  • Government accountability
  • Issues of concern to the elderly
  • Gas drilling
  • Green jobs
  • Emergency/crisis management
  • National security (water & food mentioned specifically)
  • Volunteering & service
One group mentioned as an inspiration is the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition.
