The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania recently completed a year-long survey of issues surrounding the Marcellus Shale. Our local chapter participated by extensively studying the issues and submitting a consensus study. The League has now released a position statement, as well as a study guide and a Facts and Questions document.
At a press conference announcing the study results, League President Olivia Thorne said, "We recognize the
significant economic importance of extracting gas from Marcellus Shale. However, we have serious concerns
about the cumulative, long-term consequences of the extraction process." Thorne called for adoption of a
severance tax on the extracted gas and a moratorium on drilling in state forestland. She said the moratorium is
needed to provide time to compile data, review implications and develop adequate safeguards. She cited a
provision in Article I of Pennsylvania’s Constitution that states "Pennsylvania’s public natural resources are the
common property of all the people" and that the people "have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the
preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment." |
